All of the options are applicable … no one should die or suffer from domestic violence … people need safe housing and long-term support to rebuild their lives … vulnerable people, especially older survivors deserve a fresh start and independence.

I have said “people” as men also suffer from domestic violence, need to feel and be safe and also deserve a fresh start and independence. We do need to consider the added pressure that men face, that services are aimed at women and Australia has such a dim view of what other men and women as “weak” men. If it’s difficult for a women to front up at a police station, how difficult is it for men.

They also need safe places to go. I understand that refuges cannot have men stay in accommodation with women and children but there needs to be protection and provision for them.

Childless women also deserve and need protection and accomodation and a chance to rebuild their lives. I had to return home after my husband leaving me, I had no job and I had an extremely undiagnosed shoulder injury … I faced family violence and rang a refuge and was denied accommodation or help as I did jot have children. I had no choice but to stay … I know life would be different today if I was treated equally.

Violence knows no gender or if you have children or not.
